“An ancient underground secret”
Take a tour of the Res' , a 19th century underground drinking water reservoir built on the high ground of Tyrrell Street in Newcastle East. The Cathedral like structure was opened for the first time in 50 years for limited tours of the cathedral like underground structure, which used to hold 2 million litres of fresh drinking water. Tour groups, chosen by ballot as there are a limited number, explore colonial architecture and rusted pipes that sit as they were laid over a 100 years ago. Your guide will give an insight into the construction of The Res and the original Walka Water Scheme, the first in the Hunter to deliver fresh water straight to people's homes.
