The Army Museum of New South Wales (AMNSW) is housed in the original 25-cell District Military Prison which was constructed in 1847. AMNSW collects preserves and interprets the history of the Military Forces of Britain, New South Wales and Australia and their service in New South Wales from the First Fleet to today and is part of a network of seventeen Army museums across the country. Victoria Barracks is one of the best known examples of military architecture in Australia. The Regency style Barracks were designed by Lieutenant Colonel George Barney, who also built Fort Denison and reconstructed Circular Quay. The barracks were constructed using locally quarried sandstone between 1841 and 1849 and were occupied by British troops until 1870 and by the New South Wales Military Forces and today is the home of the Army's Forces Command.
