Kata Tjuta / Mount Olga

Uluru's marginally less famous sibling is this jumble of giant, ancient rocks, 50 kilometres' drive to the west. The name of the 36 bulbous domes means 'many heads' and they're at least as spectacular as Uluru itself - the tallest rock here is around 200 metres higher than Uluru. And the finest way to see and experience Kata Tjuta is by spending a few hours on the Valley of the Winds walk, a 7.4-kilometre trail that weaves through the domes and the gorges that separate them. The Anangu Aboriginal people believe Kata Tjutu’s great rocks house spirit energy from ‘dreaming’ and the site is used for cultural ceremonies. Certainly, lots of dreams have passed these ancient rocks, which have sat here for 800 million years. Kata Tjuta is 365 southwest of Alice Springs at the eastern end of Docker River Road.
