Port Macquarie Museum showcases the best of Port Macquarie's history from its British settlement as a penal colony in 1821, through to the present day as a popular tourist resort town. The museum's significant collection is displayed in 14 award winning rooms and galleries, in a series of themed exhibits. Displays are regularly updated and temporary exhibitions are held from time to time. Port Macquarie was one of the earliest convict settlements outside of Sydney. The Museum building and additions are classified by the National Trust of Australia (NSW) as a rare example of a convict built structure circa 1836. Why is Port Macquarie special?
