“The Institute of Modern Art has been the leading independent forum in Queensland for the production and presentation of contemporary art for over 40 years.”
The Institute of Modern Art has been the leading independent forum in Queensland, Australia, for the production, presentation, and circulation of contemporary art and discourse for over 40 years. Their innovative and diverse programs embed the international in the local and engage the local internationally. They present an ambitious program of exhibitions, concentrating on commissioning new works by Australian and international artists at pivotal points in their practices. The IMA has a longstanding commitment to research and a rich history of publishing artist monographs and critical readers. The IMA generates opportunities for active engagement with contemporary art. From free artist talks, lectures, and symposiums to programs tailored to school, tertiary, and community groups, the IMA gives audiences access to the exciting contemporary art practices of our times. The IMA occupies four spacious galleries on the ground floor of the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Art, Fortitude Valley. In 2016 Lonely Planet added us to their must-visit list of attractions in the neighbourhood, describing the IMA as 'GoMA's naughty little cousin', presenting 'risqué, emerging, and experimental art for grown-ups'. Come and visit them today!
