Experiences in wild (undeveloped) caves since 1989, with caving club leaders, at Mole Creek Karst National Park (on the edge of the Wilderness World Heritage Area).Handy to Cradle Mountain, Launceston and Devonport. Club caving began here in 1946 (Australia’s first caving club, the Tasmanian Caverneering Club). Discoveries are still being made. Some 450 caves are currently known, attracting club cavers from interstate and overseas. Mountain catchments feed streams that sink into the ground and which are important for the karst ecology, endemic "living fossils" cave fauna and local water supplies. Forest cover sustains active biogeochemical processes of cave mineralisation. While “show” caves are easy to access, specialised equipment and leadership is necessary to explore “wild” caves safely and with minimal impact. Each cave involves different grades of difficulty to explore and different opportunities for photography, adventure, geomorphology and fauna interpretation. This licensed, accredited Tasmanian tourism business supports WildCare, Tasmanian Land Conservancy and Australian Bush Heritage.Half day trips for the tourist market. Includes overalls, helmets and lights hire plus lunch (full day on request).Special interest group programs include an option to abseil a wide 24 m deep sinkhole into the cave, with excellent spectator viewing.
