“You know your thighs are in for some shredding when a walk is called ‘the Staircase’. They might as well have called this the 'Gnarly Femur Burner'.”
Thigh burn aside, there’s a reason people slog it out to get to the top of Mt Bogong, Victoria’s highest peak. It’s because there’s a nice little glade of daisies at the top… we’re kidding. It’s because of the epic, spectacular view at the summit that makes you feel so proud of yourself you’ll glow with the shine of somebody who’s nailed 1986 metres above sea level. On a clear day, you’ll be able to see far out to all the surrounding hills and the Kiewa Valley below. Mounting Mount Bogong is not easy, and being so high it deserves some respect. Respect the mountain, the climate, and the conditions and be prepared. Don’t push on to the summit if the weather pushes you back. And if you do make it all the way up the staircase you’ll understand why the Aboriginal word ‘Bogong’ translates to ‘Big Fella’. You are on top of a mighty big fella of a mountain. Awesome.
