“A fully operational Victorian workshop.”
Come for the coffee - stay for the story of Ernest and Hannah Hayes! Explore this fabulous inventor’s workshop full of machinery still in working order, and a homestead with thoughtful mod-cons - an inventors gift to his hard working wife.
Ernest Hayes - the inventor, whose world-famous wire strainer is still made today. Hannah Hayes - New Zealand’s first travelling saleswoman, who in full skirts cycled into the far-off Lindis and McKenzie country with samples to sell.
The Hayes story is one of ingenuity, skill and survival in a remote and often unforgiving Central Otago landscape. They adapted to the changing times. They made things from what was available. They made things to last. They wasted nothing and they worked hard. Qualities that define the Kiwi spirit today.
Self-Guided tours allow visitors to wander through the grounds containing the workshop, farm buildings, homestead and garden. Pre-booked tours are available throughout the season and on Operating Days.
