“A quirky museum which provides a snapshot of early European life and features tools from the local Maori (Waitaha).”
Kurow Museum is the National Museum of Social Security.
Visit to learn the story of the ‘Three Wise Men’ who witnessed the hardship and saw the necessity for a scheme to help families in need.
The first people to settle in the Waitaki Valley were the Waitaha who used a reed ‘boat’ called a mokihi to navigate the wild Waitaki River. Call in to Kurow Museum to see the replica mokihi made by the late Rangi Te Maiharoa—a descendant of the Waitaha.
Kurow is the home of All Black legend Richie McCaw, so you can also expect to see a bit of pride in the town's local hero!
Pop in and visit the Kurow Museum & Information Centre for information, internet access, car registrations, road miles, newspapers, photocopying services, souvenirs and a friendly chat!
