“An art deco styled conservatory and outdoor display area.”
A great place to visit year-round whatever the season or the weather with an adjacent café established in the former park manager’s house.
The Centennial Winter Gardens were opened in 1940 to commemorate the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840. Adjoining are three small outdoor display areas in a walled Art Garden combining sculpture and art. Some of the pieces have been designed by local art students. Entry is free and the Winter Gardens are open from 9:00am to 5:00pm every day.
Permanent plantings are highlighted with changing displays of colourful flowering annuals which vary each season. A favourite with children, there is a small tunnel inside the hothouse and various statuettes and gnomes hidden away amongst the flowers and water features.
