“a scenic ride through the Piko Valley”
Piko Valley horse treks cater for groups of up to 12 riders and from novice to all levels of expertise. Your ride will take you along picturesque farm tracks bordering the upper Urenui River on one side and the native bush of Pouiatoa Reserve on the other. The farm consists of several catchment valleys and encompasses a wide variety of scenery and bio diversity. The area is also incorporated into the East Taranaki Environment Trust Kiwi conservation scheme and as such has the North Island's largest contingent of brown Kiwi (surveys estimate 270 pairs). Riders have the opportunity to see not only the farm animals but also large herds of wild goats and small mobs of wild pigs. There is also an abundance of diverse bird life featuring resident Falcons, Hawks, and Pheasants and it is common to be escorted by flocks of frolicking Fantails. The standard Horse trek is a 3 hour loop trail over semi tamed land and at mid journey there is a refreshment stop. As the clearer areas are all on the Valley floor it means the terrain is mainly flat with some river crossings. Picnic tables are available if groups wish to extend their day out in the back country and there are numerous swimming holes.
