“An architectural award winning 285m bridge that tastefully represents the Maori culture of the region.”
Te Matau a Pohe is one of the only rolling bascule bridges in the country. The counterweight is modelled on the traditional Maori fish hook, hei matua, which represents strength, good luck and safe travel. The bridge connects the industrial side of Whangarei with the airport. The distinctive fishhook-shaped counterweights are the idea of British architect Martin Knight, who's created masterpieces around the world.
