“Hanan Gallery is a small locally owned and operated business which was the dream of Invercargill artist Louise Craig.”
Louise and her husband Neville Hall opened the gallery in December 2010. Hanan Gallery is located at 130A Dee Street, above Art Supplies Southland. Access is via the stairway to the left of Art Supplies Southland.
The gallery is on the site of the Temple of Arts and Science, which was established by Irishman James Hanan in 1881.
Hanan had painted the twelve signs of the zodiac, constellations and stars on the temples ceiling. He described it as a place for, “self instruction and lectures on the most valuable branches of knowledge.” Visitors were lectured on geology, mineralogy, anatomy and astronomy. These lectures were illustrated by Hanan’s diagrams and specimens.
The gallery space that Louise and Neville have refurbished has an intimate boutique atmosphere. A second gallery is being refurbished as an area for other artists to utilise for their exhibitions.
Louise is experienced at exhibition installation, display and signage. She wants to support the arts in Southland where possible and to give artists confidence in exhibiting their work.
