It's called "Old Ironsides" and it's one of the most important ships in the world. The USS Constitution stil serves a special purpose, by promoting the United States Navy as well as America's important naval heritage. Docked in Boston Harbor inside Boston National Historical Park in Charlestown's Navy Yard, the ship is also a part of Boston's Freedom Trail. The ship is open to the public and always free to visit. It's open Tuesday through Friday from 2PM to 6PM, and Saturday and Sunday from 10AM to 6PM. But, Monday is the longest opening time, from 9AM to 6PM. When you arrive you'll be invited aboard the ship and are free to explore the top deck. The lower deck is off limits as it's currently going through "extensive restoration work." If you're planning to board, remember to bring your state-issued I.D. or passpoart if you're over 18. Visitors are able to ask questions and speak with members of the USS Constitution (which is manned by active duty U.S. Navy Sailors. These sailors serve as the ship's "interpretive historians." Be sure to also hit up the USS Constitution's Museum, located right next to "Old Ironsides" and also make sure you save time to visit Bunker Hill Monument and museum, also located nearby. -Roadtrippers The USS Constitution Museum "serves as the memory and educational voice of, by collecting, preserving, and interpreting the stories of "Old Ironsides" and the people associated with her." The privately-run museum is located at the former Charlestown Navy Yard, near the US Navy's USS Constitution. The museum is housed in a restored shipyard building at the foot of Pier 2.
Reviews
The USS Constitution is a very interesting place to visit while in the Boston area. While it is still a commissioned ship of the US Navy, you will need to be prepared to show your id and go through a metal detector which is really not a big deal. while the ship is in dry dock, the accessibility varies depending on what work they are doing on the ship. When we were there, the full masts were down and most of the guns had been removed from the ship to cut down on the weight on board the ship while it was dry-docked.
The sailors that are stationed on the boat are active duty Navy, but they will provide you with an interpretive speech on the history of the boat and some very interesting facts. It had been a while since our last visit and just like last time, it is something that I will remember from our vacation.
It's free to tour the actual ship, which is awesome. I can't believe it's still afloat... the thing is old as heck!
Under renovations.
