“one of the most photographed spots”
McAfee Knob is one of the most photographed spots on the Appalachian Trail. The Knob has an almost 270 degree panorama of the Catawba Valley and North Mountain to the West, Tinker Cliffs to the North and the Roanoke Valley to the East.
Reviews
it is a 4 mile walk from the parking lot to the point.
Google maps address is off. Do not turn on Foggy Mtn Drive. Stay straight to the end of route 779. Turn Left onto 311 south. The parking lot is about a mile up on the right. It is clearly posted Appalachian Trail Parking. The entrance to the trail is across the street.
Don't let the long hike discourage you from this amazing view. Highly recommend getting to the top at sunset (takes 2.5 to 4 hours, depending on your speed, plan accordingly). Just bring a headlamp for the dark trail back.
The address is only off by a little bit. Theres a lot to park in a 1/2 a mile from the address on here. You just have to walk across the street to start on the trail. Its a pretty rough climb so make sure you have good shoes. And eat A LOT before going I made the mistake of having a light breakfast and was shaking by the end of it. Really great view from the top!
Wow! I will remember the view for the rest of my life. Breathtaking. The hike seemed never ending but you have to do it if you're in the area! Took us 4.5 hours total, including spending about an hour at the top. Was sore for like 4 days lol.
The trail is worth the amazing view. I won't sugar coat it, the 3 hour trek, is not for the faint of heart. But, it makes the top all that more rewarding.
could not find it. Instead found a driveway with sign saying a Do not Trespass. No entry to McAfee's knob.
Came here a few times in college. great view and nice photo ops
The absolute highlight of my road trip. Absolutely worth the walk. One of the most gorgeous things I've seen in my life.
