Most tourists who want a view of the city find themselves in the Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower) skydeck, but Chicago natives know that the best view of the city is actually from the John Hancock Observatory.
Sure, you've still gotta pay to get high, the scenery is gorgeous, the staff are friendlier, and they've just dumped a bunch of money into a brand new kind of skydeck that TILTS YOUR WHOLE BODY OFF THE BUILDING.
Way cooler. Forget the Willis Tower, go here.
Went at the beginning of August, totally thought it would be packed, but it wasn't. We had plenty of space to enjoy the view and take loads of pictures.
There's a cafe up top which serves food, like sandwiches, ice creams, coffees, sodas and beer! :)
I would not recommend the sky deck tilt. It's expensive and really not worth it. It's like over in 2 minutes and you get the same view just from looking down.
Great view, and far less busy than the Willis Tower.
The John Hancock tower is by far my favourite view in the city! Its not nearly as busy as the skydeck (sears/willis) so you can enjoy your time up there without being crowded the entire time! The staff are awesome! If you get a chance ask them about the days when it is stormy and they are watching lightning go off all around the city!
I can't say that I would recommend the tilt (for an extra 7$) but i'm a bit of an adventure junkie and it just wasn't as epic as I was hoping!
