For more than 300 years, Detroit’s development has been intertwined with the Detroit River and the Great Lakes. From its early days as a fur-trading center to its growth as an industrial powerhouse in the 20th century, Detroit and its residents have utilized the river for a variety of recreational and commercial purposes.The City on the Straits exhibit provides a snapshot of the many ways in which the Great Lakes and the Detroit River have influenced the region – from their role in the economic development of the region to the abundant natural resources the region enjoys as a result of its proximity to the river. It also explores the diverse natural resources that are part of the river’s environment.
