“Ride an old mining train into the mountains”
This historic train has been in continuous operation for 128 years, carrying passengers behind vintage steam locomotives and rolling stock indigenous to the line. Relive the sights and sounds of yesteryear for a spectacular journey on board the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. Today the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad continues to provide year-round train service, operating a historical train with rolling stock indigenous to the line. The locomotives used to pull today’s train remain 100% coal-fired, steam-operated. The locomotives are 1923-25 vintage and are maintained in original condition. The coaches each feature bathroom facilities and are heated during the winter months for passenger comfort. Open gondola cars provide a panoramic view of the mountains. Concessions are available on every train. The Durango & Silverton is owned and operated by American Heritage Railways.

This railroad takes passengers on a two-and-a-half hour journey along the Animas River. The 3-foot, narrow-gauge track allows the train to make sharper curves alongside the 400-foot cliffs. During the ride, passengers “can be dropped off at certain points to hike and fish at places they wouldn’t have otherwise been able to get to,” says Andrea Seid, the marketing manager. Tickets are $49-$169. Open daily from May 8 to Oct. 30. 479 Main Ave., Durango. 877-872-4607 or durangotrain.com. Read more

Beautiful views throughout the ride. Would definitely do it again when the kids are a bit older... They were excited about it at first but were pretty much over it on the way back (especially my 3 year old). Read more
FANTASTIC! We really enjoyed it. We were on the open car, but next time I want to do the car with the glass roof, I think you will be able to see more of the mountains. Read more
