“Honoring the fallen in the heart of Military Park”
The Congressional Medal of Honor Memorial pays tribute to 3,456 Medal of Honor recipients, an award given by Congress for military valor located on the north side of downtown's Central Canal in Military Park. Created by artists Eric Fulford and Ann Reed of ROAMworks, this artwork--a series of 27 curved glass walls--pays tribute to 3,456 Medal of Honor recipients, an award given by Congress for military valor. The memorial represents 15 different conflicts, ranging from the Civil War through the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and is composed of 27 curved glass walls, each 7-10 feet high. Each day at dusk, the memorial's sound system plays recorded stories of medal winners or of the conflicts in which they fought. The one-acre memorial is located on the north side of downtown's Central Canal in White River State Park. Historic Military Park was once a Civil War encampment and home to Indiana’s first state fair. It also holds distinction as one of three (3) pieces of property that the State of Indiana is forbidden to sell (Monument Circle and the part of the Statehouse known as “the State House Square” are the other two). Today our historical gem is home to Indianapolis’ largest community events and festivals.
