“Where Lewis and Clark rested during their journey”
The Lewis and Clark Expedition arrived at Kaw Point, the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri rivers, on June 26, 1804. The expedition camped at Kaw Point for three days to rest, repair their boats, explore the surrounding countryside, and for the first time during their journey, engage martial law. Today, Kaw Point is located in the center of metropolitan Kansas City with a great view of downtown, but the Point itself remains in a natural state with beautiful wooded trails, wildflowers, and wildlife. Located along the river, the park has access to highways, the Lewis and Clark Heritage Trail, and two great rivers. This accessible park has an infrastructure to support a large number of visitors, and has an outdoor amphitheater equipped with electricity for performing arts and special events.
Reviews
Kaw Point Park is located behind run down warehouses. The point view is pretty, but the area doesn't seem like the safest place to be.
We were visiting the area from Ohio for my husband's working vacation. We decided to explore around the city. We like the outdoors and nature, so it was nice to find a park around the city. Upon entering we realized it's a very industrial area. There was a sign that said, "Smile you're on camera." I thought this was good to at least scare off people that were up to no good. There was a strong smell of fish, that was unpleasant, but I don't know that is the norm. The great view of the Kansas City skyline made up for anything it was lacking. There was ample parking. Not too many people were there...a few fisherman and a few walkers.
The walking trails here are really good even if you have little kids. Beautiful views of downtown KCMO.
