“a wondrous display of nature”
The Heard Native Plant Garden features a wondrous display of trees, shrubs, grasses, vines, ground covers and perennials native to the Lone Star State. This garden demonstrates how native plants can be used in a urban garden setting. Many of the trees and shrubs were donated to the garden by the late Benny Simpson, a native plant researcher at Texas A&M research center in Dallas. Exotic spicy fragrances greet those visiting the Heard native plant garden in spring. As early as mid-February the Red Bay and Agaritas begin to flower sending sweet saffron scents throughout the garden. Buffalo currents begin their six weeks of fragrant flowering the trout lilies slyly emerge from the leaf litter under the live oaks.
Reviews
When visiting the McKinney area in Texas, you should definitely visit the Heard Native Plant Garden which could be easily described as a wondrous display of nature.
A great place for families with kids, since this is a great first class opportunity for the youngsters to come in touch with some really amazing natural displays of flowers. Of course it is also a great place for those who generally like staring and walking through gardens. Serenity and idyllic surroundings that will calm you down and free you from the stressful reality that you may be living back home, especially if you live in large urban centers.
A great advantage of those gardens is that they highlight the native flora. The best period to visit the gardens is in mid Spring or early Autumn when most of the flowers are at their best! Just wish they were more places in the USA like this one!
I always find that the quieter I go through the sanctuary, the more wildlife I see! Great place.
Walking trails, and wildlife with a few animals. Has child backpacks for little ones. Has classes that are offered on website. Very nice escape from city life.
