“one of the designated New Mexico Scenic Byways”
U.S. Route 550 is a spur of U.S. Highway 50 that runs from Bernalillo, New Mexico to Montrose, Colorado in the western United States. The section from Silverton to Ouray is frequently called the Million Dollar Highway. It is one of the roads on the Trails of the Ancients Byway, one of the designated New Mexico Scenic Byways.
Reviews
Everyone should drive the San Juan Skyway at least once in their life, especially the portion known as the Million Dollar Highway. The views are majestic, varied, and breathtaking, sometimes quite literally as the road twists and turns, climbs and falls. In some portions there is no guardrail as you hug the curves of the mountains. This scenic drive is absolutely exhilarating, and I would recommend not only stopping at every overlook / pullover, but also stopping in the little towns in the valleys because they are charming as hell.
We opted to take the portion of San Juan Skyway through Telluride instead. When you read about this portion of highway it is also called the Highway to Hell and is deemed the 3rd most dangerous road in the world due to steep grades, no shoulder and snowy conditions.
